One Story:
One sultry summer’s afternoon, shaded by blossoming jacarandas in a courtyard of Spanish tiles, we first plucked the notes of these songs for vacationing passersby.
A sun-drenched, bearded eccentric pedaled forward on his bicycle and began to entertain us with his musings on the nature of minor key music according to Emerson. “If melancholy is associated with the minor key, and happiness with the major key in music,” he pondered, “is it correct to assume that there is no joy to be found in a minor key melody?”
We turned to each other for a puzzled moment; for if it wasn’t pure joy we experienced while immersed in these melodic lines, then it was certainly a kind of freedom of the soul and a happy enchantment.
After briefly delving into the question with our accidental friend of just what Emerson might have been suggesting, a dear old Polish gentleman approached us and offered up this perspective. “It’s not really about melancholy or sadness. It’s very simply about soulfulness. This music has the power to help one’s soul take flight, and it gets you … right here.”
As he closed his eyes and patted the place just over his heart, we looked at each other again, quietly sharing between us the knowledge that our oblation of music had brought something of loveliness to this one man, even as he had sweetly gifted us with his gentle understanding.
To our heavenly parents, from whom all things come;
and to our earthly parents, whose wisdom and unconditional love nurtured the strength to follow our dreams,
we offer our gratitude and undying love.
As always, to Paramahansa Yogananda with deepest devotion.
